A Miranda Kitchen Makeover

A COASTAL BENCHTOP REPLACEMENT · Two days, one kitchen reborn

Dark benchtops were weighing down this Miranda kitchen. A returning client asked us to swap them for something lighter and more coastal — and we finished the job in two days flat, keeping the existing cabinetry and cooktop.

When a kitchen layout is working but the surfaces feel wrong, a full renovation is usually overkill. That was the case with this Miranda project — a returning client whose dark benchtops were dragging the whole room down. At Kitchen & Home Renovations Co., we completed the benchtop and splashback swap in two days, kept their existing cabinetry and appliances, and gave the kitchen the bright, coastal feel they were after.

Miranda sits in the heart of the Sutherland Shire, just a few minutes from our Caringbah showroom. Light, coastal kitchens work here — the homes are close to the water, the natural light is good, and dark, heavy surfaces tend to fight the architecture rather than complement it. For this family, a lighter benchtop wasn't a cosmetic preference. It was the single change that made the kitchen feel like it belonged to the house.

*A note on the surface: this kitchen was completed with a product that is no longer in our current range. The closest surface in our current line-up — and the one we would specify for a similar brief today — is Quantum Zero Reflections, a zero crystalline silica engineered stone. Where we mention Reflections in this project, we're referring to the current equivalent, not the exact surface originally installed.

A Returning Client With A Clear Idea

Malcolm and his family had worked with us before on their previous kitchen in Caringbah. When they moved to Miranda, the layout of the new kitchen was fine — good work triangle, functional storage, appliances all in the right places. What didn't work was the colour palette. Dark stone benchtops and a dark splashback gave the whole room a closed-in feel that clashed with the coastal style they'd loved in their old home.

They didn't want a full renovation. They wanted the result of one, achieved with the minimum amount of change.

"We didn't like the dark benchtop at all. We wanted something lighter that would really open up the space and give it a coastal feel."
— Malcolm, Miranda

That's a much easier brief to work with than "we want a new kitchen." It meant the conversation was about surfaces, not structure — and the install time came down from weeks to days.

Why A Surface Like Reflections Works In A Coastal Kitchen

A surface in the spirit of Reflections from the Quantum Zero range is a good example of what works here — a soft white engineered stone with subtle flecking. It has a light, easy feel that suits coastal homes without being stark or clinical. Paired with existing timber cabinetry, a surface like this warms up the room rather than fighting it.

The national ban on crystalline silica engineered stone came into effect on 1 July 2024. Every new benchtop we install now uses a zero crystalline silica product, and Quantum Zero is one of the ranges we specify most often for its look, its pricing, and its performance.*

The kitchen didn't need to be rebuilt. It needed its surfaces swapped out — and the whole room came with it.

What We Kept, And What We Changed

The only new additions to this kitchen were the benchtop, the splashback, and a new Oliveri undermount sink. The cabinetry, the cooktop, and the oven were all in good condition, so we kept them. The layout didn't need a single change.

That's not a compromise — it's the point. Every piece of cabinetry we didn't replace is a piece we didn't send to landfill, and a piece the client didn't pay for twice. The result looks like a new kitchen because the surfaces you actually see and touch are new. Everything else just quietly does its job.

This isn't our only Miranda project — we've renovated kitchens across the suburb, from Kiora Road through to the streets closer to Westfield, and the brief is almost always the same: lighter, brighter, and respectful of the family home it sits in.

"This is the second time we've used Kitchen & Home Renovations Co. as we were so impressed. We're even more impressed by this second job. The finish is amazing and we're particularly grateful for how clean the workers left the place when they had finished."

Why Miranda Homeowners Choose A Benchtop Replacement

Not every kitchen needs a full renovation. For homeowners across Miranda and the wider Sutherland Shire, a benchtop replacement often delivers more value than the alternatives — here's why.

  • Two-day install time — we template, manufacture off-site, and install in two days, so you're out of a working kitchen for less than a working week.
  • Keep the cabinetry that's still good — no sense replacing cabinets that are sound; the visible changes come from the surfaces.
  • Zero crystalline silica by default — every new benchtop we install is a zero-silica product, in line with the national ban on crystalline silica engineered stone.
  • Priced for real budgets — a benchtop and splashback swap is a fraction of the cost of a full rebuild, with a surprising amount of the visual impact.
  • Local, in-house installers — the same Kitchen & Home Renovations Co. team handles every job, from Caringbah to Miranda, Gymea to Sylvania.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a kitchen benchtop replacement take?
Most benchtop replacements, including removal of the old surface, installation of the new one, and plumbing reconnection, take two days on site. Templating happens earlier, and manufacturing is done off-site in the weeks between templating and install. For this Miranda kitchen, on-site work was completed in two days.
Do I need to replace my cabinets when I replace my benchtop?
No. If your cabinets are in good structural condition and you're happy with the layout, a benchtop and splashback swap can completely change the feel of the kitchen without touching the cabinetry. We do this often for homeowners who inherited a functional but visually dated kitchen when they bought their home.
What is Quantum Zero engineered stone?
Quantum Zero is a zero crystalline silica engineered stone range. Since the national ban on crystalline silica engineered stone took effect on 1 July 2024, all new engineered stone installed in Australia must be silica-free. Quantum Zero is one of the ranges we most commonly specify for new benchtops because of its finish, its price point, and its performance in everyday kitchens.
How much does a benchtop replacement cost in the Sutherland Shire?
Pricing depends on the size of the benchtop, the stone range you choose, whether the splashback is being replaced too, and whether there's any cabinetry work involved. The fairest way to get a figure is a free in-home measure and quote at our Caringbah showroom or at your property. We'll give you a written quote with no hidden extras.
Can you match a new benchtop to existing cabinetry?
Yes — this is one of the most common briefs we work to. Our design consultants will bring samples to your home, hold them against the cabinetry in your actual light, and help you land on a surface that lifts the cabinetry rather than competes with it. For this Miranda kitchen, we landed on a light engineered stone in the same family as Quantum Zero Reflections.
Do you service Miranda and the wider Sutherland Shire?
Yes. Kitchen & Home Renovations Co. is based in Caringbah and services Miranda, Gymea, Cronulla, Sylvania, Sutherland, and the wider Sutherland Shire. We also work across the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, St George area, and North Shore.
